Is your food safe? How about your French fries?

The most common foods you eat every day contain levels of a cancer-causing agent that may make become vegan. Let us talk about acrylamide.

Acrylamide is found in French fries which are either home and restaurant-baked. It is also found in prune juince, potato chips, Graham crackers, roasted almonds, black olives, toasted bagels, corn tortilla chips, microwave popcorn, pretzels, cookies, peanut butter and cereal. Each of these foods contains various levels of the chemical. The question you may be asking is what to eat then. Practically, all the foods that are popular with kids and adults contain this chemical which is known to cause cancer in laboratory rats and mice. Now, food companies should warn its consumers about this potent chemical, but they are not doing it. This refusal led to a showdown between California’s Attorney General Bill Lockyer who wants the food industries to slap a label on their products. That is why he did not hesitate to take on the big purveyors of fast foods and French Fries. He fied suit against McDonald’s, Burger King, Frito-Lay which is owned by PepsiCo and other companies such as KFC, Wendy’s International, Lance which makes Cape Cod potato chips, H.J. Heinz, Kettle Foods, Procter & Gamble which sells Pringles. The Attorney General is requesting that labels be placed on Fries and potato chips.

It remains to be seen whether the above companies are going to deliberately put “Cancer,” “acrylamide” on their products. They want to argue that they do not put the chemical in the food. It is a natural process. So they may not want to deal with it. Let us bear in mind that acrylamide is formed when any starchy foods are headed at high temperatures. So, mom and pop who fry and bake potato at home are also producing acrylamide. California is a very particular state in that voters require the state to monitor and regulate chemicals that are known to cause cancer or reproductive harm and to force manufactuers to label their products or otherwise warn consumers. Voters made it possible with proposition 65.

It is interesting to see what is going to happen. It is fair to say that scientists are saying that acrylamide has always existed in foods since people have been cooking them. It will be interesting to watch the newswire for an update.
