Sephora is taking over the makeup and cosmetics industry. It is in almost every major American shopping center. The company created a retail environment that invited customers to roam the store and try on different lipsticks, eyeliners and blushes made by many different manufacturers. Instead of department store-type cosmetics counters that force shoppers to interact with a salesperson to sample a product, Sephora is organized around freestanding racks that feature such chic brands as Bulgari, Christian Dior, Gucci, Lancome and Calvin Klein.
Sephora's open, minimalist displays entice shoppers with sumptuous product colors, packaging and bottle design. Strategically placed mirrors, tissues, cotton swabs, astringent and makeup remover encourage sampling. Prices usually out of sight in department stores are prominently marked. Without the pressure of a salesperson eager to close a sale and move on to the next customer, shoppers feel free to spend an hour or more trying out different colors and different brands until they arrive at the exact ones they like.
Sephora was started in 1993 as a French perfume chain. French luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) acquired Sephora in 1997. LVMH also owns Givenchy, Kenzo, Dom Perignon, Moet & Chandon, Guerlain, Hard Candy, Urban Decay, and Celine, among other exclusive brands. LVMH has expanded Sephora from less than 60 stores, based only in France, to include over 393 stores in Europe. In addition to its burgeoning U.S. business, Sephora operates in Asia with seven stores in Japan.

Why do we indulge in watching the Emmys? Is it not because of the great dresses and gowns we expect the stars to wear? Or is it because we are going to watch great TV?
If it was not for the inspiration that we get from watching the great dresses, we may not have watched the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. After all, we were too busy with the news of a plane commuter plane crash to pay attention to anything else. Conan O'Brien did a good job of moving the show along, but as far as taste is concerned, he took some bad notes due to the showing of the pre-recorded skit that was broadcast as part of the live Emmy ceremony. A commuter jet took off in Lexinton, Ky, crashed into a field and burst into flames, killing 49 people. The sole survivor was the co-pilot whose conditions have been upgraded to serious. The segment opening the Emmys started with host Conan O'Brien boarding a private plane to Los Angeles. A stewardess asked him if he was nervous about hosting the show. He answered, "Nervous? What could possibly go wrong?" The plane then pitched violently. There was the implication of a crash. NBC consequently had to apologize for the skit.
The Emmy Awards show is about fashion, haute couture, high class spending, luxury, jewelry and buzz. Who was wearing what at this year's Emmy?
It has been reported that Grey's Anatomy actresses wore all the hues, trends and colors for the Emmys. Before getting any further, it was worth noting that the TV's stars showed up on the red carpet wearing low-cut V-necks and halter tops. The fashion reports that went out to radio and TV stations were about the wide range of colors that were available there: red, white and purple were the top color choices. That does not mean that metallic beading did not have its fans. The actresses had all kinds of hairdos. They went from soft, sexy, piled-high to comfortable ones. Katarine Heigl wore a beaded glamour gown in a nude color with an open neck and keyhole. Ellen Pompeo had a strapless bustier-style gown in purple which was a creation by John Galliano for Christian Dior. Sandra Oh, a member of Grey's Anatomy, was criticized for wearing too much jewelry. She had too many blings that drew attention away from her Vera Wang gown.

Tyra Banks appeared to be the best dressed of the night. She was dressed in a Georges Chakra black-lace outfit that is worth $50,000. It was offset with $3.5 million worth of Chopard jewelry. The explanation about the fitting of this dress is as important as the amount that was spent to acquire it. Tyra Banks who represented her reality show reportedly went to Paris for the fitting of the glamorous dress which has one shoulder with a deep V cutout. Pay attention to the details. The cutout was handmade. The other supermodel who was in attendance was Heidi Klum who was also accompanied by her husband, Seal. Heidi Klum was donned in a one-shoulder dress which was a draped red gown by Michael Kors. The dress clung to her pregnant body very well. Leah Rimini did the one-shoulder thing too with her Versace gown. It was a purple one with subtle sparkles. Evangeline Lilly's Versace dress was purple with all over crisscross pleats. Cheryl Hines was dressed in a puprle shantung gown by Chakra. It came with a high neck and sheer back dotted with jeweled embroidery. Virginia Madsen wore a black lace gown by Kevan Hall. The dress showed a lot of cleavage with its plunging neckline but the rest of the dress was great. Kyra Sedgwick wore a dove gray strapless organza gown by Giorgio Armani Prive with raw edge details. Mariska Hargitay wore a Carolina Herrera black lace gown with embroidered flowers down the middle. As for Megan Mullally, she wore a conservative blue long-sleeve gown by Badgley Mischka. It had a deep V neck that went to a waistband that was decorated with a jewel. Debra Messing wore a strapless gown with tiers of delicate white fabric. Allison Janney had a red tiered gown by Elie Saab. She also had on strands of platinum and diamonds by Neil Lane. Jennifer Love Hewitt wore a full-length beaded metallic gown by Collette Dinnigan.
The Emmy fashion, trends and colors may appear a second time. The Emmys is like a rehearsal for the Oscars. More extravagant and luxurious fashion will be seen then. This year's Oscar should greatly influence the wedding, Quinceanera and Prom seasons.

Such was the marquee event on the southeast corner of Shaw Avenue and First Street the other day. I was dragged out of bed to drive to the event. We can only hope to be around comes Christmas Shopping Season. The big retailers and music stores are sharpening their spurs to assault consumers with all kinds of deals. Apple's iTunes with all its iPods, songs and other devices is getting ready to pound on Microsoft's new tech creations scheduled to be released by the end of this year. Microsoft's new media player will include wireless technology. Now that will make it different from its predecessor and grande dame of the music delivery devices, iPods. The portable Zune media player will be available around the holiday season just like any major releases by giant companies. The wireless technology that it will be equipped with will allow users to share some of their favorite songs, playlists or pictures with other Zune users who are at a rather close distance. The users can listen to the songs three times over three days, or whichever comes first. With this song-sharing capability, Microsoft is telling peer-to-peer tech users that it is OK to engage in this behavior. The legitimization of the peer-to-peer sharing has come a long a way. The question to ask is whether music publishers will go for Microsoft's view. If Microsoft backs this new software with its war chest, then it will be a real competitor to the iPods. The zune marketplace will be a hot one.
So far, we know that Toshiba will build the new device. Zune Marketplace Service wants to take on the established iTunes. It will be a force to reckon with.

Our tech scientists do not want to wait longer to have their children. Some of the well-known institutions that participated in this study include Columbia University, Israeli institutions such as Chaim Sheba Medical Center and Hebrew University.

Circuit City's Home Entertainment: Large Screen Flat-Panel TV May Be The Solution
I am about to enter this Circuit City store in California. I am looking for an iPod for my husband. I want to buy an iRiver MP3 Player for my son. After all, this year, MP3 Media Players are what is on everybody's gift list. I can clearly remember the small Circuit City Store that I used to shop at with my parents. This one is not small. The company had realized that its main competitors were going for more floor space. This store is one of the new stores that displays a lot of electronics products. In the world of consumer electronics resellers, things have changed. Best-Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Dell, Radioshack, Target, Sears, CompUSA, Costco and SAM's Club have been juggling for position.
In a strange way, Circuit City which used to be the leader of the consumer electronics market has to contend for a third place right now. Best-Buy is the top dog. Even Wal-Mart which is determined to get a piece of the lucrative warranty services and electronics market appears to have done much better. The once-No.1 chain of consumer electronics stores, Circuit City has to carve or create new niches. It has to refurbish its images. While the sales of digital cameras such as Canon, Kodak, Sony, Nikon, Fuji and other brands, laptop computers and desktop computers may be used to draw customers in, the company is banking its resources on the more expensive and sophisticated items such as Advanced TVs which coincidentally are dropping in price. The low prices offered on the electronic products will not hurt consumers who are searching for great deals. Circuit City officials hope that more customers will want to invest in the flat-panel TVs, want to buy installation services, accessories and furniture. All of this change is part of the leadership of Mr. Philip J. Schoonover who is a former Best-Buy official.
It will be interesting to see how he is going to turn this company around. If he does succeed, Circuit City may reclaim the top position. If Wal-Mart gets on top, then at least Circuit City may have to fight Best Buy for the second spot. Until then, I will continue to shop at Best Buy and Circuit City. I still have to wait and see what type of electronic brands Wal-Mart is carrying.

It is hard to let go, but the retirees and current employees of Maytag have finally realized that their beloved company is no more. If it exists, it will do so a wholly owned subsidiary of Whirlpool. It will not exist as a company any longer. The shareholders of Maytag agreed to let go of the reins of the company for $1.79 billion in cash and stock. Founded in 1893 by Fred Maytag, Maytag was a farmer's tool company. Mr. Maytag introduced a wooden-tub washing machine 14 years later. For 100 years, thanks to the designs of this gentleman, the company has remained a home-appliance leader. Something had to be done to assure continuity, especially when Maytag faces competitions from other brands. Here flies in Whirlpool to its rescue with a huge offer, $1.37 billion. It is clear that Whirlpool really wanted Maytag. It increased its offer three times before Maytag officials agreed to give them a chance. They rejected offers from other other appliance companies such as Haier America and other investors.
As Maytag gets folded into Whirlpool, consumers are already asking whether they will have to pay more as one competitor is out of the game. It will be interesting to find out what is going to happen.
